The Willard Community Center Corp will use the Working Here Fund grant to purchase a water tank, garden supplies and plants for the installation of a community garden. The garden will include eight raised beds, a compost area, tool shed, perennial plants and berry bushes. Garden beds will be utilized by various groups including the Willard program children that will tend to five beds during the summer program and non-school days. Students will also visit the garden during the school year with over 100 students from kindergarten to 8th grade integrating science, math, and art curriculum into their garden learning experience. “Nutrition education and food security are the biggest needs in our community,” said Janelle Soderling, executive director. “Having a garden will encourage hands-on learning, a place for observation, experimentation, and sensory experiences.” The garden will also provide food to food insecure community members, the overflow from the garden will be put into the blessing box, an outdoor cabinet for donated food and essentials for anyone in need. “We’re honored to support local organizations like the Willard Community Center Corp that are striving to make a difference in our community,” said Amy Blomenberg, regional vice president of retail operations at FCSAmerica’s Lincoln office.
